NW Musician 101 - Workshop & Q&A for Musicians & Live Music Fans
Get a backstage pass into being a a successful working musician, whether you sing, or play rock, blues or something all your own or just watch, this is the day! All ages welcome.

Are you a new musician looking to establish yourself, a seasoned band leader looking for some marketing tips and tricks, wanting to connect with venue and festival coordinators face to face, or even a venue owner or live music lover wanting to network with others and hear speaker Drummer Michael Leasure talk about what it's like be a good steward of the music community and what it's like to tour the world with Walter Trout, you won't want to miss this event!

Lunch and learn from 11am-4pm with an optional jam afterwards after the Jam Etiquette session.

This is a closed event to regular public until 3pm and paid tickets are limited, so buy now before they are gone. Jam open to everybody.

Only $29, includes lunch and attendee packet with special offers from some of the presenters at this unique event.

MARKETING SESSION
Your band will or is a business and what do you want that to look like? Who are you? Know your audience?
~ BRANDING: Building your brand (who you are, what you stand for, what would make you unique), logos, messaging.
~ PROMOTIONS: What are the tools/materials you should have, website options, flyers.
~ OUTREACH: Build your audience, reward your fans. E-newsletters & providers/email lists, building a brand (your logo and your messaging).
~ NETWORKING: Part of marketing is networking, getting the word out. Utilizing local associations.
~ PHOTOGRAPHY: developing good relationships with the people who capture the moment, copywrites, etc (Q&A panel with local photographers) including favorite Portland shooter Jim Dorothy.
~ RECORDING & DISTRIBUTION: Part of marketing yourself, is having a product to get your sound out there to the masses. Learn how to pick a studio. Getting your music recorded is just the beginning. Where will you sell it and how can you get it outside the local area.

How to successfully book, booking agents & festival organizer panel discussion gives you helpful tips to make it to their stages and stand out in the sea of sound (Q&A with top festival coordinators Including Jason Fellman (J-Fell Presents; Harefest, Tribute Bands), Joey Scruggs (Duff's Garage, Etta James Tribute & Candye Kane benefit/Alberta Rose)
~ VENUES: developing good relationships with venue owners, how to have a successful partnership. Panel discussion (Q&A with bar/theater owners)

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Michael Leasure
Meet and hear from a busy touring national and international musician.
Based in Los Angeles and brought up just for the NWM 101, Michael Leasure has played all over the US, locally in LA and has toured the world with beloved guitarist and legend Walter Trout since 2008. In addition to be the go to guy in LA, his extensive experience has included playing with Albert Collins and Buddy Miles, Edgar Winter and Philip Sayce. He not only has stories from the road, but has an inspirational and positive outlook not only on being a part of the music community and musicianship, but life in general. You will be inspired to not only be a better musician, but a better person!

JAM SESSION
~ETIQUETTE: How to participate in a professionally run jam and be a good team player and get the most from the local jams (AKA: How to not get kicked off stage and be invited back!), taught by a successful jam leader.

OPEN JAM (after workshop, all ages)
Hosted by the Rae Gordon Band, a 2015 Semi Finalist from the International Blues Challenge. Put what you just learned to the test! MUSICIANS bring your axe, drums and bass rig provided, no keys will be available, guitar players bring your instrument and amp.
