Profs & Pints: How Nashville Became Music City
Profs and Pints presents: How Nashville Became Music City, a scholarly examination of the historical forces that filled a citys streets with song, with Robert W. Fry, Senior Lecturer of Music History and Literature at Vanderbilt Universitys Blair School of Music and author of Performing Nashville: Music Tourism and Country Musics Main Street.

Nashville residents and tourists alike flock to the city because of its thriving music scene and music-focused identity. Theyll appreciate Nashville even more if they learn about the key players that transformed it into a music destination through a talk being given at the True Music Room and Bar at the Cambria Hotel Nashville Downtown, part of the national Cambria Hotels brand.

Come learn how Nashville became Music City and how Broadway became its Main Street from an expert on the topic, Robert Fry, a Vanderbilt musicologist who wrote an entire book on the city. Hell be drawing on his archival and ethnographic research on music tourism and the roles of fan cultures in the creation and activities of Nashville and other music places. Hell also be offering insights from the classes he has taught, on subjects such as music in the South, jazz, blues, American popular music, music tourism, and DIY music cultures.

Fry will explore the development of Nashvilles broadcasting, recording, and tourism industries, and also the citys adoption and promotion of its Music City identity. Among the questions hell tackle: What musical institutions and spaces put Nashville on the musical map? What makes Nashville unique among other music cities? How is Nashvilles musical identity changing in the 21st century, and how is the city adapting to these musical shifts?

Hell also examine how the citys identity is being reinforced through immersive experiences on and near lower Broadway, and how fans have shaped the city and its experiences and helped save Nashville and its music following the flood of 2010. Hell offer a provocative proposal calling for fans to begin seeing themselves as locals, and move beyond a passive role as spectator to take a greater role in the preservation and production of music here.

The talk is part of a collaboration between Cambria Hotels and Profs and Pints intended to expand access to higher learning in Nashville. Youll leave it with a heightened appreciation of the city all around you and a better understanding of how best to take it all in. (Listed time is for doors. Talk begins 30 minutes later.)
