Yes to Life! The Foundations of Applied Improvisation
Yes to Life! The Foundations of Applied Improvisation
Thursday evenings, 6:45-9:00PM, Sep 26th to October 31st (Halloween!)
Woodside Village Church, Woodside, CA

Do you long for greater confidence and deeper joy?

Would you like to connect more easily and more playfully with friends, family, and colleagues?

Could you use more fun in your life?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it might finally be time to take that improv class youve always thought about.

Improvisation refers to the playful art of using whats available to create something new in each unfolding moment. You probably know that more and more high-performing individuals and elite ensembles have taken up the practice to give new life to their innovation and collaboration. And you likely have the sense it could help you out too. It's powerful stuff.

What material will we cover?
Youll dive into the fundamental concepts, skills, and vocabulary of improvisational theatre--woo hoo!!!--through interactive, playful games and exercises. Along the way, youll learn to build effective characters, scenes and stories.

And, we'll also ask how whatever we learn can make for a more skillful, more joyous approach to living every day.

We'll almost certainly cover the following topics:

--freedom and spontaneity
--"Yes, and!" and the art of sharing control
--how effective space object work builds an environment
--the changing status and power of interpersonal relations
--getting specific with characters and endowments
--the elements of story

So why choose this version to learn?

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, youre blessed with a bunch of great places to learn improv. Heres what makes this experience different from many of the others.

*safe container--learning a new skill can feel vulnerable. Well take special care to make the classroom a supportive, friendly arena. Never force, always choice!
*not primarily about funny (though most certainly fun!)--sometimes improv focuses on generating laughs, which can be great. Here, we'll focus on staying present, getting connected and telling great stories. Doing that almost always brings laughs as well, but they're a byproduct rather than the target.
*mindfulness mode--we'll add a good dose of mind-body awareness into the mix. Again, it wont be all yuks and goofs--we'll pay careful attention as well.
*learning community--together we'll create a group that's focused on supporting each others development. It's not a top-down model. Each student provides a spoke to the learning wheel.
*relevance for life--some improv courses lead explicitly to performance opportunities. While you may find this course inspires you to get up and perform, our main focus will remain on how this practice helps us become better humans living better lives.
*the instructor--Ted combines clarity and creativity, gravitas and whimsy. Classes move briskly and energetically while also keeping a healthy dose of reflection and pause.

Who is this for?

--adult professionals in chaotic or fast-changing environments
--closet creatives seeking access to inspiration
--leaders looking to build collaborative teams
--teachers who want to bring more fun to their classrooms
--parents who want screen-free connection with their kids
--couples who want to recharge their connection
--single folks looking to date with greater ease
--introverts who long to share more of their gifts with the world
--anyone facing a life transition: moving home, new job, leaving a relationship, empty nest

Will there be homework?

Youll probably want to try out the skills and perspectives you gain each week in the time between classes. You might have a short reading assignment to shed light on each weeks class as well.

Who's the teacher?

Ted DesMaisons has been studying, teaching, and performing improvisation internationally for over thirty years, including during his time at Stanford's Business School and and Harvard's Divinity School. He offers classes through Stanford Continuing Studies and co-hosts the Monster Baby Podcast (a curious romp through the worlds of mindfulness and improvisation). His first book, Playful Mindfulness, came out in March of 2019 and has received rave reviews since then.

OK, I think I want to sign up. Any last words of wisdom?

Sure. Just be prepared that improv can change your world.  You may find yourself smiling uncontrollably or having artful, creative responses to challenges that arise in your daily life. You may discover yourself connecting with others far more easily. If youre OK with that level of risk, then, yes, go ahead and sign up. : )

If you need any more information, feel free to contact Ted at ted@animalearning.com.

If youd like to sign up, you can do so with the links on this page. Well be delighted to have you with us!

(Note: the class will be limited to a max of 18 people, so make sure to grab your spot now!)
