Intro to the Meisner + Yat Work Supermethod with Tom Bentley-Fisher and Rachael Adler
FUSION SUPERMETHOD: MEISNER and THE YAT WORK
What happens when you take one of the great American acting techniques and one of the great European acting techniques, you dovetail them together and allow them to support and spring off the other?
You get a fusion of two great processes. A Supermethod.
THREE HOUR INTRODUCTORY EVENING
Please join us for a 3 hour, hands-on intro and Q+A with international teachers Tom Bentley-Fisher and Rachael Adler.
You will meet Tom and Rachael, stand up and do a solid 2+ hours of work with them, experiencing the possibilities of the Fusion Supermethod as you alternate between the techniques. You'll begin to explore the Yat Work, a technique developed by Yat Malmgren and taught in Europe, Australia and Canada, but not in America, and then hear Tom speak about his approach, what he believes and where he comes from. You'll have a chance to ask any questions you have about Meisner, the Yat Work, the Fusion Supermethod, and the new Waterfront program, with tracks for early, mid- and late-career actors, beginning Fall 2017. Dress in layers for easy movement and bring water, pen and paper.

TRANSPORTATION: The 51B bus stops at Downtown Berkeley BART and runs down University Avenue to 4th Street. It is less than a minute walk form the bus to Waterfront.
BACKGROUND:
Meisner Work is a fundamental American acting technique developed by Sanford Meisner from his work with Stanislavsky and the Group Theater. Living moment-to-moment and responding truthfully to a scene partners behavior, actors get out of their heads and start working from instinct. Ever truthful, dynamic behavior and authentic emotional responses produce penetrable, deeply honest performers. Meisner training involves a series of rigorous improvisational exercises, monologues and scene work developed by Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse. The technique explores Imagination, with focuses on Facts, Relationship, Points-of-View and the nuances of Relationship, Physical Impediments, Parody, Script Analysis and Research.
The Yat Work is a unique methodological approach to acting and character transformation - the work of trail-blazing performer and teacher, Yat Malmgren, who mentored Tom. It begins with physical exercises, swings, that focus on letting go of what you unconsciously rely on, unlocking resistances you are unaware of, and making physical contact with new levels of creative freedom, all ultimately producing the freedom to take greater risks. The body, not the mind, makes key discoveries to free the artist up quickly, reliably, and deeply. Students have the visceral experience of becoming and feeling free in unexpected ways, accessing parts of themselves with which they usually don't have contact. Through improvisations, text and written scenarios the work delivers ground-shifting discoveries and a capacity for inner character transformation not taught by American techniques. The Yat work meets each person exactly where they are, right now, regardless of training or experience. This allows for rapid growth and shifts, both personally and artistically, in any student willing to commit and take the risk. In the work, the performer can transform to as to become unrecognizable.
BIOGRAPHIES
Tom Bentley-Fisher has been the artistic director of five professional theatres, directed over one hundred productions and has taught master and ongoing classes at universities, theater schools and private studios in California, Canada, England and Spain. He began as an actor, training in New York and London with Sanford Meisner and Yat Malmgren, and then performed in London's West End before moving on to directing and teaching. Today Tom is Artistic Director of Tant per Tant Theatre and Film, an international, multi-lingual theater company, and is Co-Artistic Director of Waterfront Production House and Conservatory in Berkeley, CA.
Rachael Adler is Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Waterfront Production House and Conservatory. Initially trained in Film Theory and Criticism at Wesleyan University, she moved to New York to work with cinéma vérité filmmakers David and Albert Maysles. During this time she began training with legendary teachers Larry Moss and Sanford Meisner, among others. She began to thrive as an actress and a model. As her success grew, she began to coach fellow actors for film, television and on- and -off Broadway. In 1999 Rachael was one of three invited back to Meisner's New York conservatory, The Neighborhood Playhouse, as part of the Meisner Teacher Training Program. She has taught, directed, and produced at her own acting studios, American Conservatory Theatre, and at numerous colleges and high schools. She is presently a Master Teacher at MeisnerEspana in Barcelona and Co-Artistic Director of Waterfront Production House and Conservatory in Berkeley, CA.
