DEGENERATIVE LUMBAR SPONDYLOLISTHESIS:
INSTABILITY AND BEYOND!

Sunday, March 29, 2020
8:30 am to 4:00 pm

Zamoiski Auditorium
Sinai Hospital of Baltimore
2401 West Belvedere Avenue
Baltimore MD 21215

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS) is a common incidental finding in the general population and may or may not be a pain generator in individuals with low back pain. Differential diagnosis and assessment of biomechanical contributing factors are essential in planning effective treatment.

Medical management is based on diagnosis of tissue-level pain generators, with an awareness of the contributions of biopsychosocial factors. Management of instability and other factors in physical therapy for this complex patient population should be based on best evidence.

The Sinai Rehabilitation Center is offering a one-day course that will present attendees with a multidisciplinary approach for evidence-based evaluation and invasive and noninvasive treatment for patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to:
  1. Discuss the multifactorial presentation of patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis and consider multiple pain-generating tissues.
  2. List biopsychosocial factors such as pain catastrophizing and depression, which may contribute to central sensitization, and discuss their relevance to patient presentation.
  3. Describe medical management of patients with DS.
  4. List the components of an initial evaluation and state expected findings for a patient with DS.
  5. Demonstrate manual therapy techniques to improve biomechanics for patients with DS.
  6. Instruct a patient in an evidenced-based exercise program for patients with DS.

AUDIENCE

Physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and physical therapy students

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES

Edward Soriano, DO, is the medical director of the Center for Pain Treatment and Regenerative Medicine at Sinai Hospital. A specialist and expert in interventional pain management, he has been named as a Top Doc by Baltimore magazine for several years. Dr. Soriano completed a medical degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine and an internship at Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Stratford, New Jersey. He received residency training at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he served as chief resident. Prior to joining the LifeBridge Health team, Dr. Soriano was the medical director of MedRehab and Spine Associates in Marlton, New Jersey, and clinical associate professor at Temple University in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Soriano performs interventional procedures, including novel approaches such as pulsed radiofrequency, PRP, and stem cell injections. Dr. Soriano, with Lizzie Bellinger, contributed an invited chapter on the topic of adult degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis, with projected publication in 2020.

Elizabeth Cavanaugh Bellinger, PT, DPT, OCS, COMT, earned a doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She practiced for 4 years in a manual therapyfocused private practice. During this time, she completed an orthopedic manual therapy residency, earned her certification in orthopedic manual therapy, and was certified as an orthopedic clinical specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. An adjunct faculty member at the University of Maryland School of Medicine Department of Physical Therapy and Rehab Science since 2016, Lizzie joined the team at Sinais Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics in 2017. She and Dr. Soriano co-authored a chapter on the topic of adult degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis, which is scheduled for publication in 2020.

Simeon Mellinger, PT, DPT, OCS, joined the RIAO in 2015, upon earning a doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Since then, he has been certified in trigger-point dry needling, Astym, and selective functional movement assessment. Simeon recently became the sports rehab and research specialist at the RIAO and earned certification as an orthopedic clinical specialist from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in 2018. He has an interest in manual therapy and chronic pain, and focuses on incorporating current best research into assessment and treatment in the orthopedic PT practice.
