Overview:

In America, overt racism and discrimination are easy to spot. But there is another kind of discrimination that is quieter, harder to identify and to address: microaggressions.

Microaggressions don't just 'hurt your feelings,' its a subtle way to dismisses, alienates, insult, and invalidate someone. Microagressions only reinforces the differences in power and privilege which perpetuates racism and discrimination.

This session demonstrates how race intersects with ethnicity, religion, sex, gender identity, sexuality, age, ability, national origin, citizenship status, and more, and how covert acts of racism are contributing factors to prejudice, and race-based trauma to name a few.

The importance of talking with young children, and all children, about race comes down to a fundamental value of recognizing that it is essential for us to break down the hold white supremacy has on our culture and institutions; push back against racism, bias, and hate; and help create communities where diversity is celebrated, equity is achieved, and inclusion is the norm. Join us for this full-day session on how to reduce and address bias in support of children and families, and how we can navigate microagressions with young children and with each other.

Why I Should Attend:

Imagine dying by a thousand cuts...

Microaggressions are a weapon and those experiencing this kind of discrimination prematurely ages the body. These subtle statements and actions can widen the disparities in income, education, geography, and lifestyle between white children and children of color. This workshop offers us the tools and awareness to spot it, address it, and ultimately change our behavior.
