Wood and Silk Pendants Using Knotless Netting
A fabric-creating technique that predates knitting and crochet, knotless knitting, also known as Nålebinding, creates a stretchy fabric using short lengths of yarn and a single-eyed needle. This unique technique is practiced today by women of the Nanti tribe and indigenous people of the Camisea region of Peru. Join fiber artist Debra Rapoport for an afternoon-long, hands-on workshop in using knotless netting to create a pendant or necklace from bamboo yarn, silk, and other materials. Taking inspiration from the works on view in the exhibition New Territories: Laboratories for Design, Craft, and Art in Latin America, this workshop teaches the novice and expert alike how to adapt this historically rich technique to create their very own contemporary fashion accessory.
