Reptiles and Amphibians of Pepperwood
Accompany Dr. Nick Geist, professor of biology at Sonoma State University, on an exciting field exploration of reptiles and amphibians. Pepperwood has a remarkable diversity of frogs, salamanders, lizards, snakes, and turtles in its various habitats. Learn where they live, what they eat, how they reproduce, and how they are faring in the face of urban and agricultural development and how climate change might affect these animals. The class includes a moderate hike of 1-3 miles at a brisk pace.
Dr. Geist's research interests focus on reproductive behavior in reptiles and western pond turtle biology. His current research is on fundamental aspects of western pond turtle biology, especially mechanisms of temperature dependent sex determination, population dynamics, and conservation of the species. Other areas of active research include the evolution of reproductive strategies in crocodiles, dinosaurs, and birds. He received his Ph.D. in zoology from Oregon State University.
