Early studies in the area of historical trauma focused on survivors of the Jewish Holocaust from WW-II. Ready applications were quickly made to other people groups who suffered similar trauma. Our clients often have family histories of multiple generations suffering from the devastating trauma of addiction and mental illnesses. Because of this, the studies and findings regarding historical trauma and Native Americans (as well as other populations around the globe) also have direct application to many of the people we treat in our agencies here in Clark County.
Core topics related to this treatment issue to be addressed are post-colonialism on a global and historical scale, American assimilationist policies targeting America's indigenous population, trauma that is beyond simple PTSD due to its social and cultural implications, recovery needs that are specific to healing a community, not just isolated individuals within the community (i.e., corporate or collective healing), dynamics of what might be referred to as the "soul wound" of a community and the people in the community, on a local, regional, and even national scale.
Behavioral Objectives
This training will:
- Introduce participants to the US history relevant to providing culturally appropriate services for Native Americans,
- Provide definitions to key terminology related to historical and generational trauma,
- Teach about the constellation of symptoms that accompany the historical trauma response (HTR),
- Identify the contributing factors to "dysfunctional community syndrome" (DCS), and how DCS relates to our clients' recovery,
- Review the grieving process and identify its use as a part of the healing journey and a guide to therapeutic interventions,
- Provide insight into forgiveness and reconciliation as therapeutic healing factors, and
- Participants will learn a theoretical model of reconciliation that addresses treatment and recovery needs.
