Small Acreage Expo 2014
The 9th Annual Small Acreage Expo is a fun and valuable event which offers participants a choice of 13 different classes (see choices below) on topics small acreage residents want to know. Come and learn about some great topics, get to know local resources, meet other small acreage landowners and have a great time at the 78th Street Heritage Farm!
An open house during the lunch hour will allow participants to meet and learn more about local agencies that serve the public as well as ask questions to local vendors participating in the event.
Sandwich lunch boxes provided by Applewood Restaurant are available for only $10. Includes: Roasted turkey breast, sliced pepper crusted roast beef, black forest ham or veggie sandwich with jack cheese, dijon mayo, lettuce, sliced tomatoes a side of pasta salad prima vera, a chocolate chip cookie, an apple and a cold beverage.

Session A (9am-10:15am):
A1 - Get the Lowdown on Lime
Gordon French, LJC Feeds
Want to green your pastures? Gordon will discuss timing, rates, and application methods for lime and fertilizers for pastures in our area. Then join him for a demonstration (weather permitting) of proper lime application!
Septic Inspection Certification
A2 - Septic Inspection Certification
Joe Laxson, Clark County Public Health
Learn how to correctly inspect your home septic system to keep your investment working properly. At the conclusion of this presentation, take the Public Health Operations & Management test to become certified to do your own septic inspections (gravity fed only).
A3 - Drainage Solutions for Small Acreages
Seth Kenworthy, Drainage Masters
Got drainage problems? Seth will talk solutions. He'll cover how to use, install, and locate a french drain to manage runoff and reduce mud on your property. He will also highlight other tips and techniques to improve drainage around your home and outbuildings.
A4 - Are Weeds Ruling Your Paradise?
Ron Hendrickson, Clark County Vegetation Management
Learn to identify and control plants that don't belong in your pastures and may harm your animals. Ron will discuss how to win the fight against noxious, invasive, and poisonous plants. Then practice spotting weeds on a pasture walk at the Heritage Farm.
Session B (10:30am-11:45am):
B1 - Goat Keeping Basics
Candy Yarnell, Clark County Goat Association
Goats are becoming popular on small acreage properties in Clark County. In this session, Candy will discuss selecting goats by breeds and uses, housing, fencing and space requirements, basic health care, feeding and poisonous plants you should be aware of.
B2 - Working with Nature to Grow Fruit
John Saltveit, Home Orchard Society
What if you could grow a variety of fruit in harmony with nature? In this session, John will talk about growing common fruits and berries as well as exotics such as aronia and guava. He'll also discuss important considerations such as pollination, grafting, garden design, and pests.
B3 - Local Resources for Rural Living
Denise Smee, Clark Conservation District
Do you have farm projects that need technical or financial assistance? There are many resources available in Clark County to assist small acreage landowners with various projects. In this session learn about cost share, technical assistance and conservation programs from local organizations.
Session C (12:45pm-2:00pm):
C1 - Beekeeping: Saving the Honeybees
Charles Bennett, Clark County Beekeepers
What can you do to help our local honeybee population? One way is to become a beekeeper! Learn the basics of getting set up, tips about keeping bees and what to expect after you get your own swarm.
C2 - Vermicomposting: Worm Fertilizer
Master Composter/Recycler
Don't let those food scraps go to waste! Learn how you can use worms to reduce your waste footprint while creating a nutrient rich organic fertilizer that will give your garden a healthy boost. Get tips on creating a vermicompost bin and caring for these special worms.
C3 - Hands-On Fence Building (continued in session D4)
Trevor Prothero, Wilco Farm Stores
Learn how to install versatile high tension fence the right way. This class is great for the DIYers who want to get hands on experience setting posts, making braces, tightening wire and turning a corner.
Session D (2:15pm-3:30):
D1 - Raising Beef 101
Gary Fredricks, WSU Cowlitz County Extension
Interested in raising your own beef? Learn practices and tips for how to do it the right way. Gary will provide information on breed selection, nutritional requirements and space and housing recommendations for beef cattle.
D2 - Pasture Repair: Improving Pastures Through Renovation & Management
Gene Pirelli, OSU Extension
Does your pasture need a makeover? This session will cover techniques to revitalize pastures and management practices that will keep them productive. Gene will also discuss grass varieties best suited for our region.
D3 - NatureScaping to Attract Beneficial Wildlife
Meredith Hardin, NatureScaping of SW WA
Do you enjoy seeing hummingbirds, butterflies and other wildlife in your yard? In this session, learn how to create a backyard habitat. Meredith will discuss how you can attract these creatures by choosing the right plants and designing your landscape to meet their habitat needs.
D4 - Hands-On Fence Building (cont.)
