Yoga & Mental Health Workshop
Your heart starts beating faster, your stomach tightens, you feel a rush of heat then suddenly your mind is racing and you cant think straight. The familiar feeling of stress. Maybe sometimes its obvious to you (hello holidays, family drama, end of the quarter/semester chaos, day to day challenges, etc.), but maybe sometimes it seems random.
Stress is powerful energy. What if you could recognize the early signs of stress and ride the emotional wave rather than feeling like its crashing down on you? What if you could learn to befriend it rather than see it as a foe to be avoided or defeated?
This workshop is co-led by Varrita Siryon & Psychotherapist Kate Nichols. Kate will teach the foundations of the stress/nervous system and Varrita will teach a Somatics based yoga class. You'll learn the basics of the mind-bodys natural stress response and walk away with tools to minimize the impact of stress.
This workshop will help you to feel ready and able to face the inevitable difficult moments with greater confidence and compassion.
Bios:
Kate: Kate Nichols is a psychotherapist who practices virtually in NJ. She specializes in working with young women & LGBTQ folks to quiet their voice of self doubt and show up as their bravest, boldest selves. Her approach is trauma informed and she utilizes EMDR along with a variety of therapeutic techniques to help her clients overcome their biggest struggles so they can live with more presence and confidence.
She believes in the rebellious power of liking yourself in a society that profits from your self doubt, and that the more women & queer folks there are who begin to show up as their true selves, the better the world can be. But so many of us are conditioned to people-please and shrink ourselves in order to be accepted, so unpacking the distress and fear that comes with showing up and loving yourself is really hard.
Kate has lived it - she's gone from people-pleasing to showing up boldly as herself, as she's also a comedian. By day she's helping her clients unpack the baggage weighing them down so they can move through their lives with more confidence and joy, and by night she's on comedy stages telling her own story and showing up as her authentic, bold self. Her work incorporates an understanding of the mind-body connection, using somatics and nervous system regulation techniques to enhance your ability to be brave even when you're scared, to self soothe and regulate so that you can live a life aligned with your values, wants and needs, despite the inevitable challenges that come your way.
Varrita: Varrita started her journey of yoga over 10 years ago. After having a competitive gymnastics career, she was left with chronic back and joint pain. Through yoga, Varrita learned how to manage not only her pain but also her anxiety. Varrita did her 200hr certification with Jennifer Yarro, later completed a 300hr certification at Ayuryoga Eco Ashram in India, she has received a 300hr Yoga Psychology certification with Ashley Turner and many more certifications.
Varrita is also a Licensed Massage Therapist and specializes in therapeutic Thai Massage. She is a Reiki Master, Life and Nutrition coach, Doula, and a student of Ayurveda.
Her yoga classes are slow flowing with a balance of effort and ease. Varrita encourages students to focus on connecting to the flow of the mind, body and breath to cultivate a deeper sense of awareness and self compassion.
