Born at the Disco is Jennifer OConnors 4th release on Kiam Records, the label she started in 2002 before signing with Red Panda and then Matador. Licensing her music to dozens of films and television shows including The Handmaids Tale, Orange Is the New Black, The Good Fight, Sons of Anarchy, and Grace and Frankie, has helped support the label over the years, including projects for other Kiam artists, as well as the record store, which she and Bezunartea opened in Nyack, NY in 2014.

OConnor has played in Dump with James McNew of Yo La Tengo (who also played bass on two of her albums) and has shared stages with the likes of Neko Case, Wilco, Robyn Hitchcock, Silver Jews, and numerous others. While many creators are re-assessing how to sustain both practice and career, OConnor is gratified to have finished a new album that reflects her enduring desire to keep growing through music.

O'Connor says: I am very proud of this record. Its part origin story, part quiet reflection, part angry awakening. Its about family and love. Its about gayness and blame and regret. Its about taking stock and taking responsibility. Its about exhaustion and relief. Its about annihilation and reconstruction. Its especially about uncovering what is true. And then not being afraid to live by it.

BORN AT THE DISCOThe homespun feel of the music, all understated guitar solos and steady drum machine grooves held firm by OConnors quietly affecting vocals, never feels like its missing anything. But despite the flourishes, the singer hasn't gone entirely techno-happy as her indie folk-rock and lyrics tackle introspective subject matterthe results from the album are quite poignant and emotional (among the standouts include Crimes, Carrying You, and Lucky Life). The use of electronics on Born at the Disco wont alienate O'Connor's longtime fansrather, they add a new wrinkle to her sound. Forbes

Her nimble, soft voice, as pure as ever, proves to be a solid fit for a grunge-rock drone like the stripped-down Tell the Truth and the psych-pop harmonies of Who Can You Kiss. Traces of straightforward OConnor numbers exist on Born at the Disco, too, like the stark piano ballad Crimes and the driving, guitar-heavy highlight Less and Less. No Depression
