Hometown Hootenanny: Straight from the Honky Tonk

Saluting the distinct style of music made popular in southern dancehalls and West Texas honky tonks, the Nov. 9 "Honky Tonk Hootenanny" starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Historic Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby in downtown Everett.

While honky tonks have been around since the Wild West, the unique musical style began to establish itself in the 1930s with the infusion of Western Swing musicians like Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Hank Williams Sr. and George Jones later embraced the music, and modern-day honky-tonkers include Dwight Yoakam, Garth Brooks and Joe Diffie.

Guests for the Nov. 16 show are Knut Bell & the Blue Collars, a local country band that's famous for its "Honkahillarockabilly" style, and the Americana family band Jenny and the Blue Moon Boys.

The Hometown Band will perform songs that include "American Honky Tonk Bar Association" by Garth Brooks; "Close Up the Honky Tonks" by Dwight Yoakam; and "Boot Scootin' Boogie" by Brooks & Dunn.

Tickets for the Nov. 9 show are $17 for adults, $14 for seniors/students/military, and only $5 for kids 12 and under. Purchase tickets online at brownpapertickets.com or by calling the Everett Theatre at (425) 258-6766. The box office opens at 6:30 the day of the show.
