JUAN DEL GASTOR Workshop: ¡FIESTA!
JUAN DEL GASTOR

Workshop: ¡FIESTA!
Toque, cante, y baile in one weekend.

Oct. 4-6 in Atlanta

Study with an icon, connect with a legend --

Juan del Gastor is known for playing the Morón style of flamenco guitar. People around the world say the style is hard to describe: simple yet so full of feeling. From Morón de la Frontera, Juan's style of guitar brings today's aficionados the sounds of his legendary uncle, Diego del Gastor. Juan's singing and dancing styles reflect his Gypsy roots: simple, grounded, and expressive. Juan has a unique place in flamenco today. His form of expression reaches back to the turn of the 20th Century (yes, 20th you youngsters) and has a place on stage at today's venues such as France's festival Mont de Marsan, Seville's Peña Flamenca "Torres Macerena", and California's Festival Flamenco Gitano. He is a lively entertainer and a renowned teacher of baile Gitano and the flamenco fiesta. Studying with him brings more than new pasos, chords, and letras. It is a chance to connect to an important part of the story of flamenco in Spain.

Juan Gómez Amaya, known by his artistic name of Juan del Gastor, was born in Morón de la Frontera, Spain, a small town located outside of Seville. Though he has made a name for himself, Juan's life as an artist is tied to that of his uncle Diego del Gastor, as he was Juan's master since he first started playing. Juan began going on stage with his uncle when he was very young. They performed at all the fiestas where their presence was requested. "In this way, when he became fed up of playing, he would pass me his guitar to continue what he had started. This was obviously happening under his direct supervision."

Juan has accompanied such revered singers as Manolito de Maria, Juan Talega, Ansonini del Puerto, Joselero, Perrate de Utrera, Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera and Miguel Funi. It was with these singers, gypsies with long distinguished artistic lineages, that he learned the art of accompaniment. A natural entertainer and festero, Juan loves to sing and dance in the gypsy style of his home town. His contagious good humor and spontaneity have sparked many an impromptu flamenco fiesta, which have drawn to a close in the early hours with the sound of his guitar playing a soulful soleá.

Juan has performed in theatres and festivals around the world. He has performed with Torombo, Farruquito, and Jairo Barrull and has also performed in the Flamenco Festival in France: Mont de Marsan where he accompanied Paco Valdepeñas, El Cabrillero and Miguel Funi.
