Community-supported Death and Dying
Thank you for your interest in attending our Community-Supported Death and Dying Weekend.
In collaboration with Spiral Living Center and Crossroads DeathCare, we will have discussions and workshops centered on death and dying. We will explore ways our community can come together in support and loving care of one another. Learn valuable skills and tools for grieving, ritual and ceremony. Registration is required for attending and a donation of $20-$70, no one turned away for lack of funds. Please donate based on your ability.
For out of town folks--There are numerous local, over-night accommodations: Air B&Bs are the best local option.
This event is being held at the Takilma Community Building, outside of Cave Junction,9367 Takilma Rd. 97523.
**Feel free to bring a photo of, or object representing, any beloved departed ones for the ancestor altar.

SATURDAY
10-12PM- Welcome/Opening/ Introductions

12-1PM-  Michael and Angela Franklin: Advanced Directives/Living Wills
One of the greatest concerns, shared by many, is the looming fear of becoming a burden to our family. Un-answered questions, and unspoken wishes for your legacy can create schisms that sometimes never heal. Leaving little question about your desires can help to alleviate that burden on family, loved ones, and caretakers. Advanced care directives  and advanced death care directives is a way to document your personal wishes for how you are to be treated with concerns to medical intervention, and post mortem ceremony. Angela and Michael Franklin, of Crossroads DeathCare, will be walking us through these vital and sacred documents.

1-2PM **LUNCH bring your own sack lunch --snacks and refreshments provided**

2-5PM- Lily Myers Kaplan: Be-Friending Death, A Keynote Address:
In this keynote address, Lily Myers Kaplan, founder of Spirit of Resh Foundation and author of Two Rare Birds and Loss to Legacy will share stories. Shell talk about accepting our human mortality as a powerful influence on how we choose to live. Her talk will weave readings from her books with mythology and earth cycles as guiding patterns for embracing death as a natural part of living. Your stories and questions are a welcome part of the program which will culminate in a ceremony of embodied storytelling. This will be followed with a silent walk in nature and the building of a shared community altar to honor the connection between birth, life, death, and rebirth. 6-7PM- **FUNDRAISER DINNER BY FOLK, $10-15 sliding scale**

7-8:30PM- Jerry Allen: Grief Therapy and Support:
With a background in therapy and leading support groups, Jerry will be presenting various techniques (visualization to somatic experiencing) to use to work with our own grief, becoming more deeply aware of our own bodies, develop healthy boundaries, find inner resources to overcome moments of crisis, and experience peacefulness, safety and relief from stress. We will go through a number of experiential exercises and discuss forming Illinois Valley grief support groups. For more information on Jerry Allens work go to: www.gratitudeway.org

10-10:30 Opening

10:30-1PM-Maris Bergrune: Post-Mortem Matters: Ancestors and Ancestral Ecology
We will explore ancestors, ancestral healing, and the difference it makes in our personal lives, families, communities, and the earth when we advocate for the wellness of the dead.
Compassionate Death Meditation:

1-2PM- **LUNCH bring a sack lunch, snacks and refreshments provided**

2-3PM- Angela Franklin: Dying in the Illinois Valley-- Home Funerals/Natural Burials Angela will discuss the different options for home vigils/funerals and body disposition here in the Illinois Valley. We will look at the legal and logistical aspects of home funerals and natural burials, along with a look into the cost our modern funeral industry. How can we empower each other and reclaim our sovereignty over our death and bodies?

3:30-5:30PM- The Compassionate Community Project: Building a Companion Circle:
Have you ever wondered: who will be there for me when I need it? How can I cultivate a multi-generational, caring circle of support NOW? This will explore practical steps for building your companion circle. Our time together will begin with storytelling about companioning, then move into sharing a brainstorm on what makes a circle of service stick. Well complete the experience by exploring the steps needed for forming your own circle.

6-7PM- Michael Franklin:1,000 Tiny Deaths
Death is not something that happens to us. It happens through us. In our living days, we are offered many opportunities to learn and grow our relationship to death, bending the arc until it is a circle, unbroken, once again. Michael will speak towards those moments of opportunity, and open the conversation around how we *want* to die, and what we are doing in our lives to accomplish this transition.
