HEIRLOOMS II
Following the format of 'Heirlooms I', this iteration will begin with a multi-channel audio performance piece and culminate in a live set of songs. Using the rich backdrop of GG's Social Club, Ankita Mishra retells the familiar story of Draupadi, an ancient Indian princess from the Mahabharata who is lost by her 5 husbands in a game of dice and disrobed in the center of the kingdom. Mishra is constantly trying to find ways to connect her two cultures and in this piece, finds a comparison between ancient Indian mythology and current gender politics. In embodying Draupadi, the artist raises questions about grace, self-worth, the public vs. private feminine body, and the slippery function of clothing as both protection and provocation.
