Learn @ Lakewood: The Spaces We Set Aside - Cemeteries, Past and Present
Join us Sunday, September 29th from 4:30-6 p.m., as we explore the history of death and cemeteries in a lively conversation with University of Minnesota Senior Lecturer Ann M. Tandy.

Death is a paradox: It is both singular, in that every one of us will experience it, and infinite in its variety, in that every culture handles death differently. Lakewood Cemetery sits at the intersection of a variety of important developments in how Western cultures have handled their deceased, particularly in response to the pressures of urban growth.

This conversation will go back and forth between the big issues of how we as communities create and maintain particular spaces for the dead and dying, and how we as individuals experience those spaces.

We hope you will come ready to share some of your experiences with death and the rituals surrounding it, with the understanding that our point is not to define a correct way to do this; everyone's experience is unique. We hope that you feel called to share experiences, but also honor those who chose to simply observe.

Senior Lecturer Ann M. Tandy teaches British Literature at the University of Minnesota, including a course on death, dead bodies, and grieving in Victorian literature, science and culture. She has a keen interest in death and the traditions surrounding this universal experience.

This free event is part of the Learn @ Lakewood Series, a new series that explores topics associated with death, dying and remembering. These workshops and seminars invite diverse perspectives and shine fresh light on meaningful subjects that haven't always been easy to talk about.

Parking & event details:
The event will take place in Lakewood's beautiful Garden Mausoleum. Parking is available along roads inside the cemetery near the building.
