Nov 4: the beloved David Berkeley with new songs
Casa Phoenix very proudly welcomes back songwriter and author David Berkeley for the Washington, D.C.,  release of his new political EP "The Faded Red and Blue."
Doors open as always at 6:30 for a vegetarian feast (our gift to you - 100% of ticket proceeds go to the musician). Music starts at 7:30.  Leave your shoes at the door; BYOB, and please text 202 270-5048 in advance if you're game to help cook or clean up. It's always fun.

Berkeley has been called "a musical poet" by the San Francisco Chronicle, "a double fantasy of Nick Drake and Donovan" by Rolling Stone, and praised for his "lustrous, melancholy voice" by The New York Times. He's a Harvard grad, has been on This American Life, and he won the Kerrville New Folk Competition and ASCAPs coveted Johnny Mercer Songwriter Award.

While touring with his duo project Son of Town Hall (who have also appeared at the Casa), Berkeley has been writing and recording political songs that speak to us, hard yet gently.  The five songs of "The Faded Red and Blue" cover central topics of the past two years: Trump, gun violence, immigration, the environment, even suicide. "I have two sons, Berkeley explains. "They are eleven and eight. These past two years have been particularly tough for me not only as a songwriter but also as a father. Though I found it easy to write about what was angering me, I wanted to do more than just rant. I didnt want to widen an already gaping divide. Thats not really why I write songs." Berkeley has managed to find hope, despite the subject matter. "So Ive tried to find some common ground, maybe even some shared humanity, he continues. I wrote them as much for me as for you. And I wrote them for my boys. To remind us all that we still live in a world that is worth loving, that is still worth holding dear." The release comes at a time in our national history where we so need a voice that can spread compassion and encourage unity.
