Seahurst Saturdays: Science in Action! Fishery Observers

Students will place themselves in the shoes of a fisheries observer and conduct their own fish population survey. Students will 1) compare fish populations in different locations 2) discuss why some fish might be more or less abundant in certain locations 3) understand how sampling
a subset of a population can provide information about the entire population 4) identify a particular fish species in their own "sample" using identification keys.

A 10 -15 minute powerpoint presentation will be provided prior to the activity to give an overview of what fisheries scientists do, and where and how they conduct their work. Slides will primarily consist of photographs taken by myself, as I verbally share my experiences.

At the end, we will have a wrap up session where the students will have a chance to discuss the importance of population surveys and fisheries management, and how it applies to the world on a global scale.

Seahurst Saturdays help families connect to nature and learn more about the diverse life around them at Seahurst Park in Burien, WA. Science in Action! Fishery Observers is geared towards families with 4th-7th grade students but all ages are welcome! Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
