SUD: Southern Identity Across the Globe - Workshop by Breathing Art Company

Rooted in Breathing Art Company's existing dance work "SUD," this workshop explores questions around Southern identity, both in Italy and across the globe. Breathing Art's Artistic Director Simona de Tullio leads this creative and compositional two hour workshop based on material in the company's piece and participant's original movement ideas. Participants will use the body's natural movement language to explore its capacity to communicate about the workshop's themes. Curious dancers of all levels of experience, amateur to professional, are invited to attend (ages 16+).

Italys Breathing Art Company brings Be Southern, a series of workshops, performance, and photography, to Jersey City July 27-29, 2018 at SMUSH Gallery (340 Summit Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07306). A two-workshop series investigates global Southern identity and violence against women through the medium of modern dance, while performance and photography highlight the beauty of Southern Italy.

The Be Southern gallery exhibition features dance-photography by Clarissa Lapolla, which is available for sale. The exhibition opens Friday, July 27 from 6-9 pm with free live dance performance at 7:30pm; the gallery is open Saturday and Sunday July 28-29 from 6-9pm. All gallery hours are free and open to the public.

The dance workshop series is Saturday and Sunday July 28-29 from 11am-1pm, and is open to curious dancers of all levels of experience ages 16+. Williams Women: Exploring Violence With Shakespeares Fairer Sex takes place Saturday, July 28 11a-1pm, and SUD: Southern Identity Across the Globe is Sunday, July 29 11a-1pm. Workshop tickets are $25.00 each.

All Be Southern events take place at SMUSH Gallery, one of Jersey Citys newest art spaces. SMUSH Gallery hosts creative and community work including visual art, performance, workshops, and professional opportunities for working artists. The gallery is also available for rent, and will begin offering classes in Fall 2018.
