Writing and Family: Inspirations and Obstacles

We all grow up with people who influence and shape us, whether its our traditional or nontraditional family. Our identities are tied to these people and reflected in our writing. In this workshop we will focus on the pains & joys of family and everything in between.

In this class we will:
-bring in writing by other writers to study how they write about family
-bring in family photographs or objects to write about and discuss
-Generate writing from prompts focusing how family shapes and influences our worldview
-Edit our work focusing on line and musicality of language

This class is for all levels of writers.

Susie DeFord is the author of the poetry collection Dogs of Brooklyn. She studied poetry at Florida State University, and received her MFA from the New School University. Her work has appeared in BOMB, Poets and Artists, Mipoesias, Work Zine, Dog Fancy, Shampoo, the Anthology "Dogs Singing," amongst others. She has taught writing at Brooklyn Friends School, Berkeley Carroll, and the College of New Rochelle. She currently lives in the Hudson Valley, NY where she is a real estate agent & dog trainer by day and a writer and and experimental musician of NEON GRLZ by night.
