Événement

At the Intersection of Sephardic, Mizrahi, and Russian-Speaking
The American Sephardi Federations Young Sephardi Scholars Series, in partnership with the COJECO BluePrint Fellowship, is excited to host a 3-part learning and cultural series about the Russian-speaking Jewish (RSJ) communities of the Greater Sephardic world. The cultures and histories of Bukharian, Georgian, and Kavkazi (Mountain) Jews are situated at the fascinating intersection of RSJ and Sephardic-Mizrahi life, but are often overlooked within both spheres. Led by Ruben Shimonov, the multimedia learning series will provide a unique opportunity to explore the multilayered and rich stories of all three communities. The dates of the series are: 2/26 (Kavkazi Jews), 3/20 (Bukharian Jews), and 4/24 (Georgian Jews). All sessions will begin at 7 pm in ASFs Sephardi Scholars Center at the Center for Jewish History (15 West 16th Street, NY, NY 10011).

Light dinner reflecting the cuisine of Bukharian, Georgian, and Kavkazi Jews will be served.

Registration: $10 per session or $20 for all 3 (now closed).

Please note: space is limited. The first lecture sold out. Tickets will not be available at the door. Once sold out, the event will be closed.

Ruben Shimonov, 2018 ASF Broome & Allen Fellow, was born in Uzbekistan and grew-up in the vibrant Greek and Turkish Sephardic community of Seattle. He obtained his Bachelors degree in International Relations, Near Eastern Studies, and Jewish Studies from the University of Washington. As a Bukharian Jew, belonging to the indigenous Persian-speaking Jewish community of Central Asia, Ruben has developed a deep interest in the rich mosaic of Sephardic and Mizrahi culture. This has informed his active leadership and community organizing endeavors within key organizations in the American Jewish community, including the American Sephardi Federation (where he is the Young Leadership Boards VP of Education), Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Moishe House, and OneTable. He has also brought this passion to his work at Queens College Hillel for the past four yearsmost recently as Director of Cross-Community Engagementwhere he had the unique responsibility of creating meaningful Jewish experiences for a portion of the student body that had been minimally engaged in the pastmainly, Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews. He is very excited to be taking his personal and professional passions in Jewish education and community building to the next level as he currently pursues Masters degrees in both Public Administration/Nonprofit Management and Judaic Studies at New York University. Ruben was recently named a COJECO Blueprint Fellow and is working on community projects that highlight the intersectional identities of Russian-speaking Greater Sephardi Jews. He is also the founder of the Sephardic-Mizrahi LGBTQ Shabbat Series, a one-of-a-kind opportunity for LGTBQ indiviudals from Greater Sephardic communities to gather for monthly home-based Shabbat dinners around the city.

This project is created as part of COJECO BluePrint Fellowship supported by COJECO and Genesis Philanthropy Group.
