Turning New Furrows: Horse-drawn Equipment for the 21st Century
In the 1930's, Henry Landis wrote that his Landis Valley collection was a reminder of the early days--how people lived, what they did and what they had to do it with.  He lamented that "every day, these relics of a former day are leaving the county, never to return."

Today, brothers Henry and George Landis would be surprised to see contemporary models of the discarded equipment they purchased at local auctions almost a century ago.

With the growth of the local food movement and the expansion of produce farming here in Lancaster County, there is a growing industry for the manufacture of field equipment designed for draft horses or small tractors.

Join a "behind the scenes" look at the old and learn about contemporary models currently being manufactured here in Lancaster County.  Dale Stoltzfus, from the Community of Oasis at Bird in Hand and marketing manager for Horse Progress Days, will join Joe Schott, farm and garden manager at Landis Valley, for an afternoon presentation and tour of the Farm Machinery and Tool Barn, bringing the old alongside the contemporary.  The innovation of past centuries is still the basis for present day manufacturing.  Learn how the left-turning plow in the 1700's changed farming practice and take a look at new models being used by produce farmers today.

Cancellation policy:  All materials must be pre-purchased by the instructor, therefore cancellations can only be refunded prior to the sales-end date.
