Singer-songwriter Ryley Walker will headline a daylong benefit show for New Salems 1794 Meetinghouse on Saturday, August 19th. Walker will be joined by numerous bands from the Northeasts experimental music scene, including Sunburned Hand of the Man, PG Six, and New Salem guitarist Willie Lane.

At 28, Ryley Walker has already spent a decade as a touring and recording artist. Starting off in the Chicago experimental music scene, he honed his skills on the road, frequently touring through Europe and America with the acoustic guitarist Daniel Bachman. Walkers music captures the spirit of an earlier erareviews often reference the 70s sounds of Tim Buckley, John Martyn and Van Morrisonwhile remaining wholly contemporary; Robert Plant has declared himself a fan, as has legendary bassist Danny Thompson of Pentangle, who joined Walker on a tour of Britain. As The New York Times put it, [Walkers] songs are rooms to poke around in, rustling the curtains.

This will be Walkers first appearance at 1794 Meetinghouse, but many of the artists who will share the stage have been frequent visitors, both as audience members and as performers. Were very fortunate to have such a supportive musical community, says Adam Frost, the Meetinghouses Vice President. Artists come to play, or to listen, and then keep wanting to come back, and to support the hall. This benefit evolved out of a concert last fall, when one of the bands fell in love with the sound of the room, and asked if it could be used for recording this summer; we of course said yes, and the show is in part their way of saying thanks.

Built in the 18th century for the Congregational Society of New Salem, the Meetinghouse had ceased regular Sunday services by the Civil War, although it remained active as a community center well into the next century. Its transformation into a venue for the arts began in 1987, when a small group of townspeople applied for, and received, a grant to create a civic center in New Salem. Renovations soon began, and by 1994 the building was ready to open for performances. Our last major renovations were done more than a quarter century ago, and its time to freshen up says Frost. Our organization has a two-fold mission: To bring the Arts to the North Quabbin, and to preserve our historic building. This show will help with both.
