SPE-PB Completions and Operations Study Group
Gary Griesenbeck, Senior Vice President, ORION Water Solutions
Bio: Gary is responsible for R&D and engineering at ORION.  He is an engineering graduate of Texas A&M with 35 years of progressive experience in operations management, project management, engineering management and mechanical & process engineering. Industry experience includes oilfield drilling services, oilfield solids control, refinery waste oil and wastewater recycling, hazardous waste site remediation, industrial wastewater process design as well as operation and management of industrial wastewater treatment facilities.
Abstract: Although oil prices and activity remain far below the levels of mid-2014, operators are using the downturn to improve costs and operational techniques.  Water access and disposal remains a concern for operators who manage large scale completion programs.  These operators are increasingly using produced water to frac wells and that usually means higher bacteria levels that must be managed.

Chlorine dioxide has emerged as a popular method of bacteria control in frac fluids and is used on-the-fly during completions, used to disinfect water impoundments, and used to clean up wells that exhibit bacteria-induced problems such as corrosion, scaling and H2S.

Despite the benefits chlorine dioxide offers, it is not the perfect solution to every situation.  Anecdotes about the longevity of its effectiveness, potential to increase corrosion, and hazards of unsafe handling have some wondering, is it the right solution for my program?

This presentation will walk through the good, bad, and ugly of chlorine dioxide as used in oil and gas stimulation and production activity.  Some of the areas examined include: safety in ClO2 generation and handling, dosage control, compatibility with common frac chemicals, effectiveness and longevity, corrosion potential, and cost effectiveness versus other bacteria control agents.  The objective is to give engineers some information from which to make more informed decisions about whether or not to use chlorine dioxide and how to use it safely and effectively when they do.
