The Music Business Explained in Plain English
Much is changing in the music industry. Major label record companies are losing money, firing people, and regrouping. Sales of physical CDs have collapsed, and digital dstribution of music has taken off. Old sources of income for artists ad songwriters are disappearing and new sources of income are taking their place. Music markets and audiences are increasingly fragmented. New artists are more hesitant than ever to sign any record deal, as record companies seek to sign artists to eals in which the record company profits not only from record sales, but from oter sources of artist income such as live performance, publishing, and merchandising.
There are new important players in the industry as the dominance of major label record companies recedes. This has lead to changes in the way new artists are "discovered". Further changes in the music business include new terms in record contracts; new methods of msic distribution; new markets for music; new legal cases tht clarify copyright law; new rules for licensing songs for use on the internet; the rising importance of artists building their own websites and fan base; and a new empahasis on touring as a source of income and brand building.
