Master Classes and Seminars at Isadora Duncan's 135th Birthday Bash
Morning and afternoon master classes, lectures and panel discussions will be offered by Company dancers, distinguished guest teachers, and published Duncan scholars including Associate Artistic Director Cherlyn Smith, Janaea Rose Lyn, Alice Bloch, Gemze de Lappe, Morgana Rose, and Faith Kimberling. Classes to feature live piano accompaniment by Vladimir Shinov and Erika Podoprigora.
Tickets for each event are $10 in advance/$15 at the door. Registration in advance strongly suggested. All classes and lectures meet at the Judson Church. Arrive early if you are registering on the day of the event. Please email info@isadoraduncan.org or call 212-691-5040 with questions.

This special guided tour of the Greek and Roman Wings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is recommended for all ages. Advance registration required by May 16th.

Master Class 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
From the Sensuous to the Sublime: The Brahms Waltzes, Op.39
Teacher: Janaea Rose Lyn
This workshop will identify the Gypsy, Spanish and Middle Eastern styles which influenced the suite of dances often referred to as The Many Faces of Love. Participants will also learn the choreography of one of Isadora's signature works set to Waltz No. 15, and dance it with rose petals.

Duncan Dance: A Foundational Technique
Moderated by Dr. Alice Bloch, Gemze de Lappe, Cherlyn Smith and Janaea Rose Lyn.
Many people think Isadora Duncan had no technique and simply improvised. However, her dances are based on a profound understanding of how the body moves. Renowned Duncan dancer Gemze DeLappe explains how studying Duncan technique develops dancers' kinesthetic sensitivity, expressiveness, musicality, performance qualities, and ballon skills they can transfer to any style of dance.

Duncan Technique: Structure creates an environment in which freedom can flourish
Teacher: Cherlyn Smith, Associate Artistic Director
A misapprehension still exists that there was only pure improvisation behind Isadora's work. But in fact, she created, and her descendants built upon, a beautifully conceived and fully realized pedagogy. We will explore the layers upon which the technique was built, first understanding and creating the lines, then moving and jumping them, and finally adapting them rhythmically to find and experience the musicality which is the brilliant cornerstone of Isadora's legacy.

The Dance of the Future: Its Roots and Radicalism
Lecturer: Dr. Alice Bloch
Dr. Alice Bloch discusses the 19th century revolutions in science, women's health, and philosophy that let Isadora Duncan dare to dream of future dancers as "the highest intelligence in the freest body."

Children's Class (ages 5-9) 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

One of the most exciting classes a young dancer can take: rhythmic, joyous, and playful. Imagine the beauty of children at play, running, skipping, sliding and jumping. Now picture those same children, their innate movement inclinations sculpted and unified by a master dance teacher and set to classical music.
Mother & Daughter Class (ages 9 and up) 12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Teacher: Dr. Alice Bloch
Mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunts and cousins, too, enjoy the life-affirming movements of Isadora Duncan. Sway, walk, skip, and maybe even waltz together in the warm and welcoming movements of her dance. Learn the beautiful Chopin Prelude No. 7 and signature patterns like the Greek-inspired Tanagras on which Isadora based her choreography.
Master class: Isadora for the Woman's Soul (all ages) 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
