** About this film: **
(Kenzie Bruce, Portland, OR, 2024, 72 min, in English) Washington State premiere!

Since WWII, states have relied on incarcerated labor to fight wildfires. Inmates risk their lives to protect us, and yet they face numerous barriers upon their release, from housing insecurity to discrimination in hiring. Firebreak follows Brandon and Royal, who served time in Californias penal system, as they start a nonprofit to help Californians turn their behind-bars firefighting experience into long-term careers. Their nonprofit meets a dire need: wildfires are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change, and Western states are already facing shortages of trained firefighters. Firebreak combines thrilling footage of on-the-ground firefighting, a searing indictment of prison exploitation, and a more hopeful story of resilience and personal transformation. While making this film, director Kenzie Bruce trained as a type II wildland firefighter to immerse herself in Royal and Brandons world.

I first read about Brandon and Royals work while sitting in my apartment in Portland, Oregon, in September 2020 during a state of emergency as fires crept toward the city and while the air outside surpassed air quality index charts. I was stopped in my tracks after reading just a few sentences in an article that mentioned their work. To me, it was not only impressive (and seemingly sets up a replicable model for California and other states that use incarcerated labor to fight wildfires), but this work also shows a clear connection between climate change and social justice
-Kenzie Bruce, director of Firebreak

Accessibilité

Ticketing, concessions, cinemas, restrooms, and our public edit lab are located on Northwest Film Forums ground floor, which is wheelchair accessible. All doors in Northwest Film Forum are non-motorized, and may require staff assistance to open. Our upstairs workshop room is not wheelchair accessible. The majority of seats in our main cinema are 21 wide from armrest to armrest; some seats are 19 wide. We are working on creating the option of removable armrests! We have a limited number of assistive listening devices available for programs hosted in our larger theater, Cinema 1. These devices are maintained by the Technical Director, and can be requested at the ticketing and concessions counter. Also available at the front desk is a Sensory Kit you can borrow, which includes a Communication Card, noise-reducing headphones, and fidget toys. The Forum does NOT have assistive devices for the visually impaired, and is not (yet) a scent-free venue. Our commitment to increasing access for our audiences is ongoing, and we welcome all public input on the subject! If you have additional specific questions about accessibility at our venue, please contact our Patron Services Manager at rajah@nwfilmforum.org. Our phone number (206-329-2629) is voicemail-only, but we check it often.
