Learning to Fly by 1 Double-O Four Eight
Set in a high-rise office building, learning to fly introduces us to two co-workers in a shared office. They are more than business associates: their conversation is not just cordial discussion, its electric..
Suddenly, a tremendous explosion reverberates throughout the building, knocking them out of conversation and onto the floor. Heat and smoke become overwhelming. They should evacuate immediately but are trapped. With pre-blast flirtation still in the air, they are able to complete a couple phone calls and get enough information to cement the futility of the situation.
From this moment on their exchange is dominated by themes of survival, fate, and consequencethings that thousands of others also dealt with on this mid-September day in 2001 that changed the world as we know it. Dialogue is halted when falling human figures pass outside the 98th floor window. As the office becomes more oppressive, they make a decision to join hands, embrace freewill and take their own courageous leap from fire and smoke into fresh air.
Inspired by historical images and recordings, learning to fly combines multiple artistic elements (tabletop puppets, multimedia, soundscape) into one human story about the power of hope and choice in the face of death.
