28 CANDLES is a celebration of love, growth, and the milestones of my early 20's. Oh, and MY BIRTHDAY, of course. This year, in lieu of a traditional birthday party, I just want to sing and make music with & for my friends. This IS my party and I want you there! Taking place on the 13th & 26th of June, a cover set ranging from SZA to Stevie Wonder will feature the vocal stylings of Jasmine "Jaz" Robertson, Simmery Branch, and Deon'ta White. Accompanied by a 6-piece band featuring the talents of Annika Andersson, Cleo Goldberg, Nate Hall, Ella Grace, Sam Martin, and Autumn Woods, with special performances by local bands Mozey and The Kryptids. You don't want to miss this!
This event is also thrown in support of two of my passions: 1) the "Reclaim Osage" initiative which is a fundraiser by Mike Africa Jr. of the MOVE Organization, a black liberation group based in Philadelphia. The objective of "Reclaim Osage" is to help MOVE buy back their family home on Osage Avenue, which was seized from them by eminent domain following the 1985 MOVE Massacre: a city-sanctioned, police-led bomb attack of the residential home which resulted in the deaths of 11 MOVE members, including 5 children. Mike Jr. intends to reclaim full ownership of the property on behalf of its previous owner (his late aunt) and turn it into a public monument/exhibit, in honor of his family. 2) my original stage show about the MOVE Organization and their story, which I've been drafting for roughly 3 years now. I plan to continue workshopping the show later this year, so 50% of all revenue and donations from 28 CANDLES will support that process. The other 50% will be donated directly to "Reclaim Osage." What could be a better birthday gift?
