Welcome the Orcas 2024
Celebrate the seasonal return of the endangered southern residents to central Puget Sound at this annual winter gathering hosted by The Whale Trail. Learn about new laws to protect southern residents, and hear from researchers about their fieldwork and recent encounters.
In 2023, Washington State passed legislation requiring boaters to stay 1000 yards away from southern residents year-round. The milestone law is based on science showing the harmful impact of boat noise on the ability to the orcas to find and catch their prey. The law takes effect on Jan 1, 2025. Captain Alan Myer, WDFW Enforcement. will discuss the new law, and what it means for boaters.
Orca researchers Mark and Maya Sears will share updates about recent encounters with southern residents, including a rare superpod. The orcas have been in central Puget Sound more than usual this year, attracted by a large run of chum salmon.
Welcome the Orcas 2024 will also feature information tables from marine conservation organizations and community groups.
Doors open 6:15. Program starts 7 PM.
Come early and help us get the holiday season off to a good start! Light refreshments will be provided.
