About
(Sara Gómez, Cuba, 1977, 73 min, Spanish with English subtitles)

The only feature from the radical Afro-Cuban filmmaker Sara Gómezwho also worked as an assistant director with Agnès Varda and Tomás Gutiérrez Alea before her untimely death at age thirty-oneis an extraordinary portrait of post-revolution Cuba. Blending invaluable documentary footage with a loose narrative about the budding relationship between an outspoken schoolteacher (Yolanda Cuellar) and a young worker (Mario Balmaseda) facing a moral crisis, One Way or Another depicts revolution as an ongoing process that takes place at the level of communityamong friends, lovers, coworkers, teachers, students, and parents, all of whom must work together to negotiate a new social order. Above all, Gómez offers a trenchant intersectional critique of the lingering sexism and machismo that, she argues, must be cleared away in order to create a truly just society.

De Cierta Manera feels raw, shot on a handheld camera, and inhabited by real lives and real passions, fueled by the engine of Gómezs own revolutionary fervor for representing all the people who, in spite of serious societal change, have still been overlooked by their own country.  Annie Geng, Screen Slate

Accessibilité

Ticketing, concessions, cinemas, restrooms, and our public edit lab are located on Northwest Film Forum's ground floor, which is wheelchair accessible. We have a limited number of assistive listening devices available for programs hosted in our larger theater, Cinema 1. These devices are maintained by the Technical Director, and can be requested at the ticketing and concessions counter. The Forum does NOT have assistive devices for the visually impaired, and is not (yet) a scent-free venue. Our commitment to increasing access for our audiences is ongoing, and we welcome all public input on the subject! If you have additional specific questions about accessibility at our venue, please contact our Patron Services Manager at maria@nwfilmforum.org
