Time for Three

Through the Mountains is an immersive album that takes the listener on the journey of mammals through the Sierra Nevadas. With the wisdom imparted to their offspring, mammals provide a timely perspective on life and trials in the modern world.

Time for Three (TF3) lends clarity and sensitivity to this journey through voices, string instruments, and original music completely inspired by the Sierra Valley and the mammals therein.

Mammal is a Musical Headwaters original songbook for the album, Through the Mountains by the Grammy© Award-winning trio Time for Three. With illustrations by Max Conway, the songbook combines Earth Science, Ecology, Language Arts, and the Visual and Performing Arts. A truly multi-media experience, the songbook, and album deepen the capacity for environmental stewardship via the arts.

More about Time for Three:
Bonded by an uncommon blend of instruments and vocals, Charles Yang (violin), Nick Kendall (violin), and Ranaan Meyer (double bass) have found a unique voice of expression. To experience Time For Three live is to hear the various eras, styles, and traditions of Western music fold in on themselves and emerge anew.

Earning praise from NPR, NBC, The Wall Street Journal, Time for Three is renowned for their charismatic and energetic performances in venues including Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and The Royal Albert Hall. In 2020, the band partnered with cellist and composer Ben Sollee to put together the soundtrack to the new Focus Features' film Land, starring and directed by Robin Wright. The film first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 31, 2021. They have collaborated with artists as diverse as Ben Folds, Branford Marsalis, and Joshua Bell, and have premiered original works by composers Chris Brubeck and Pulitzer Prize-winners Jennifer Higdon and William Bolcom. Their most recent commission by Pulitzer Prize-winner Kevin Puts, Contact, premiered with the San Francisco Symphony and the Philadelphia Orchestra in summer 2022. This concerto is featured on their new album, Letters for the Future, alongside Jennifer Higdons Concerto 4-3, released on June 10th, 2022 on Deutsche Grammophon. The album was recorded with The Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Xian Zhang and has been on Billboard top 10 Classical Recordings charts and nominated for a Grammy in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo category.

Musical Headwaters is a program that commissions new Sierra Valley-inspired musical works, such as a song cycle or suite of dances, to bridge nature-based education with the visual and performing arts to deepen children's social and emotional connection to the earth.

How does it work?

Musica Sierra commissions a group of musicians or composers to create a new work that reflects a nature-based concept. Musicians spend a week in the Sierra Valley performing their new work and teaching the students of Sierra-Plumas County. Musical Headwater is unlike any other commissioning program as it partners with local, state, and federal organizations to emphasize the importance of collaboration between music and nature. Our partnership list includes Trout Unlimited, The Feather River Land Trust, Fish and Wildlife, Parks and Recreation, and Plumas Audubon Society.
