"Multilingual"

Is music a language? Are there dialects, vocabulary, tongues, and national identifiers in musical composition? In the world today, the number of people who are considered "multilingual" out number those who are considered "monolingual." In this program, CPSTL presents an exploration of musical language, and music imitating language. In Libby Larson's Bid Call, the saxophone and cello mimic the sound of an auctioneer, a sound that is instantly identifiable and distinctly American. We will present two forms of French expression, by Debussy and Schmitt, do they sound "French"? What does that mean, and how are they different dialects of the same language? In the culminating work of a lifetime of German composition, we will present the Brahms Clarinet Trio Op. 114. Can you hear the highly constructed forms underneath the Romanticism? From the elevated and academic perspective of Brahms, the haunting sounds of the Romantic movement permeate his German landscape. An evening of exploration into the world of language awaits when we collaborate with Valentina Takova, cello and Nina Ferrigno, piano, to present "Multilingual."
