Beginning his career in the cabarets and film studios of Weimar-era Germany, Franz Waxman (1906-1967) wrote sassy and irreverent popular songs. Fleeing Nazi persecution, Waxman first settled in Paris and wrote sardonic songs for the French cabaret circuit. His final exodus was to Hollywood, where he composed 144 film scores.
These scores garnered a staggering twelve Academy Award nominations -- winning twice -- and the songs he wrote for these films, by turns, embrace the rhythms and forms of his adopted land or sound distinctly European in nuance.
Waxman is best known for his scores for such iconic films as "The Philadelphia Story", "Bride of Frankenstein", and "Sunset Boulevard" as well as his celebrated "Carmen Fantasia". This entertaining cabaret will survey Waxman's life in exile through his greatest songs in German, French and English.
