Born in 1873 and raised in Brooklyn, Clare Beecher Kummer studied music in New York and Boston and first established herself as a songwriter. Her Valentine song "Dearie" sold over one million copies after appearing in the Broadway musical Sergeant Brue (1906), and was one of 37 titles she copyrighted. She is also known to have worked as an uncredited music consultant for theater, but in the teens, she turned to play writing, herself, and had a bona fide hit Good Gracious, Annabelle in 1916. Later comedies include Be Calm Camilla (1918), A Successful Calamity (1917, written for William Gillette), Pomeroy's Past (1926),and 1933's Her Master's Voice, all distinctive for sparkling dialogue and contrived plots that eventually sorted themselves out. Her Broadway productions included 12 plays, 10 one-acts, and 5 musicals.
