Richmond County Orchestra Fall Season Begins with "Besame Mucho" Featuring Latin inspired pieces by Mozart and Rossini

Guest artist Grandmaster Jhong Uhk Kim debuts as veteran musicians Edward Brown and Elene Pfond perform at this world premiere of New York Landler.

September  2014---The Richmond County Orchestra (RCO) continues its 15th season on Saturday, October 4, 8 p.m. at the Music Hall at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden  with "Besame Mucho" a Latin inspired pieces inspired by Mozart and Rossini.
This is the singing debut for special guest Grandmaster Jhong Uhk Kim.  The performance features local talent guitarist Edward Brown and the CSI guitar ensemble playing Concerto in D Major (RV 93) by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) and Clavelitos, RCO will perform the world premiere of "New York Landler" by Elene Pfond.  RCO principal trumpeter and Staten Islander Joseph Kaminski will solo in "La Virgen de la Macarena." The orchestra will play music by de Falla, Granados, Gomez, Bizet, excerpts from "Carmen" and Rossini "Barber of Seville."

About the artists:

Grandmaster and Professor Jhong Uhk Kim is anEntrepreneur who has achieved building  successful martial arts businesses, in the real estate business and longtime restaurateur, will be making his singing debut with the Richmond County Orchestra.  

Born in Korea, and immigrating to the United States in 1975, Kim attain his Bachelor's and Master's degree in science. Meanwhile, he had to work tirelessly to support himself and his then family which would grow to include seven children. A ninth degree black belt  in Tae Kwon Do  he  formed a chain of karate schools now known as Dragon Kim's Karate USA, sanctioned by both the International and U.S. Olympic Committees. Currently, there are seven such schools that operate in the Tristate area.  Kim also is proprietor of the International House of Pancakes franchise in Staten Island.

Beyond martial arts, Master Kim's business background is far more diversified. As a real estate investor, he has accumulated several properties.


Ms. E. Pfond   was born in South Germany where she grew up in a musical family.  Her father was a violinist and viola player in an orchestra. Since her childhood, she has been attracted to classical music such as Bach, Beethoven and Mozart and learned to play piano, violin and flute. The "New York Laendler" is her first major composition.  She is also a painter and lives in New York City.

Edward Brown (guitar instructor/performer) holds a BA degree in Music from the College of Staten Island, CUNY and two MA degrees, in Music History and Music Education, from Hunter College. He is a recipient of the Dr. Benno Lee Award for Excellence in Graduate Music Studies. Ed has studied with noted guitarists Alice Artzt and William Matthews and attended Master Classes with Christopher Parkening, John Duarte and Paul O'Dette. Mr. Brown is a pioneer in guitar ensemble development on Staten Island, having founded the Wagner College Guitar and Lute Ensemble, a group he led for nearly twenty-five years. He joined the CSI Music faculty in 1989 and subsequently created the CSI Guitar Ensemble, which has become one of the Music Program's most popular and lauded groups. Mr. Brown has contributed articles and reviews to the Lute Society Quarterly and Soundboard Magazine. He has been awarded numerous grants for research and performance projects, most notably his five-year series entitled "The Music of Olde Staten Island." In addition to his many solo performances, Ed has appeared as guest guitarist with The MetroChamber Orchestra, Staten Island Philharmonic, Omni Ensemble and The Richmond County Orchestra. Mr. Brown records for many labels, including Pantheon.

RCO principal trumpet and Staten Islander Joseph Kaminski will solo in "La Virgen de la Macarena" The orchestra will play music by de Falla, Granados, Gomez, Bizet, excerpts from "Carmen" and Rossini "Barber of Seville". Please Mozart.
