DIASPORA ~ Food for Thought: roots, ritual, re-imagined

Dancer, Choreographer, Teacher, and The 418 Project's 2009 Artist in Residence, Cat Willis, takes a journey into the African Diaspora through dance, spoken word, and music. This multi-media production performed by a diverse group of dancers and poets... from Santa Cruz and the wider Bay Area.

DIASPORA- Food for Thought explores notions of race, identity, and the cultural landscape of the American experience. Join us for the telling of the American story from the perspective of the African Diaspora.

roots: the place from where we originated is one of ambiguity, pride, and memory.

ritual: we create ourselves, as Americans, in layers. The rituals of race, mental slavery, and the American cultural experience shape all of us.

re-imagined: in the age of Obama we ask ourselves questions of who we are today. We look beyond our comfortable boxes and imagine what we have not yet seen.
Join us for a production that promises to be both beautiful and thought-provoking!

Local dancers include; Donna Von Joo-Tornell, Shawn Merriman Roberts, Melissa C. Wiley, Molly Katzman, Leesha Zeiber, Tammi Greenberg, Micha Scott, Alexis Jackson, Mia Birdsong, Latrice Miller, Yasmina Porter, and Reina Heinz.

Guest Choreographer and Master teacher, Mandjou Kone and Drummer, Salif Kone join this production, as well as Bay Area Poets, Ekua Omosupe, Jasmine Schlafke, and Yahya Freeman.
