Children of Medea
This compelling one woman show took the DC Capital Fringe Festival by storm, winning the 2008 Board of Director's Award for "Best of Fringe" and is a featured 2014 selection from the Consortium of Asian American Theaters and Artists.

Created and performed by Sue Jin Song, Children of Medea draws on one of the earliest stories of female immigration in the history of Western drama--the mythical figure of Medea. The play takes that story and draws clear parallels with modern immigration and the cultural strains it places on family dynamics. It also reflects on more metaphysical modes of escape, embodied by the tale of Alice in Wonderland.

Though Song plays over twenty different characters, the story is primarily told in four voices:
CYNTHIA, the eldest 17-year old daughter and senior in high school, who took over the responsibilities of the home after their mother abandoned them four years ago.
JULIANNE, a willful and imaginative 10 year-old, she relishes childhood and refuses to grow up as puberty looms ahead.
ALICE (from Wonderland), Cynthia's alter-ego and subconscious voice, and
MEDEA, who always speaks for herself.

From a 2008 review in the DC Theatre Scene:

"As in most good stories, domestic issues abound in Children of Medea. Mother walks out the door and out of the family for good, leaving Cynthia and her little sister Julianne in the despondent hands of their workaholic father. Song plays out their stories with raw tenderness, probing the girls' hardships like they're half-healed scars....For all the angst of growing up, the show is thrillingly lighthearted at moments, and frequently very funny. Song is a gifted comedian with a lovely, expressive face, and her myriad characters always snap into clear focus before we have to wonder who is who."

Sue Jin Song received her MFA in Acting from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. She has performed at various theaters around the country such as Arena Stage, Cincinnati Playhouse, Syracuse Stage, Sacramento Theatre, George St. Playhouse, Pearl Theatre, Capital Repertory Theatre, Constellation Theater, and Theater J. She has worked on numerous world premieres with Velina Hasu Houston and Paula Vogel. She spent four years workshopping new plays with the Van Lier Writers as a Usual Suspect at New York Theater Workshop.

Her television credits include Law and Order, 24, ER, Spin City, and As the World Turns. Her film credits include: Someone Like You (starring Ashley Judd and Hugh Jackman), Pipe Dream (starring Mary Louise Parker and Martin Donovan), and Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School (starring Marisa Tomei and John Goodman).
