IIt was my first week on the job as night editor at a daily newspaper in Oregon. I'd just been promoted from reporter to supervise a deranged night crew of copy editors, reporters, photographers and production workers. I'd be the last word in crucial decisions on deadline. If a major story broke, I'd make the call to tear up the front page and get it published. To show the editor-in-chief that he'd made the right decision in promoting me, I wanted to make a really big impression. And boy, did I ever.
