Mark Sandman, frontman of the Boston-based alternative rock band Morphine, died fifteen years ago, on July 3, 1999. It was the kind of death from which rock legends are born -- he was onstage, at the height of his powers, with the most ambitious album of his career having just been completed. Morphine were signed to a powerful record label, and if they weren't a household name in the music world, they had a large cult following that enabled them to pack large clubs and theaters worldwide.
In the wake of Sandman's death Morphine's surviving members drummer Billy Conway and saxophonist Dana Colley regrouped with a nine-piece lineup of Boston-area musicians to pay tribute to the band and keep Sandman's music alive.
Tonight's show is a salute to Mark and the amazing music he was able to create - featuring Billy Conway, Dana Colley, Christian McNeill, Laurie Sargent, Jerome Deupree, Evan Harriman, Tom Halter, Russ Gershon, and Mike Rivard.
VAPORS OF MORPHINE
From the ashes come Vapors of Morphine (formerly known as Members of Morphine & Jeremy Lyons, and the Ever-Expanding Elastic Waste Band). The group has advanced from performing tunes by the seminal rock outfit Morphine, adding psychedelic renditions of African Blues, originals and obscure covers of rock, Delta Blues and New Orleans second-line tunes. They are played with inventive arrangements and the unusual yet funky and powerful instrumentation of baritone saxophone, two string slide bass or guitar, and drums. Vapors of Morphine leave audiences from Boston to Chile, New Orleans to the Netherlands wanitng more.
All three of the surviving members of Morphine -- baritone saxophonist Dana Colley, original drummer Jerome Deupree and succeeding drummer Billy Conway -- met guitarist/singer Jeremy Lyons in September of 2005 after he was washed up on Massachusetts' shore from New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. After informal collaborations prompted Dana to invite Lyons to the gig Palestrina, Lyons had a 2-string slide bass like Sandman's built and began learning much of the Morphine cannon. The group plays with either or both of the drummers, so has appeared both as a trio and quartet.
Starting in the spring of 2012, original drummer Jerome Deupree took a year-long hiatus for health reasons; Billy Conway now lives out West in Montana, so Boston drummer (and Jerome's protegé) Jeff Allison has been adding his own spin, filling in on local and regional gigs, and now shares drums duties with Deupree.
