Back by popular demand, the Rat City Rollergirls presents the Well Balanced Skater.  This six-part class will help you better understand your anatomy and mechanics, teach you corrective exercises, and prevent overuse syndromes that commonly occur with skating. The core, hip/pelvis, knee, foot, shoulder, nutrition, and balance/cross training concepts will all be addressed to make you a more balanced, pain-free athlete.

All sessions will be instructed by Rat City Rollergirl's own Alex DeLarge (aka Jill McVey, DPT, ATC).  Alex brings years of clinical knowledge and experience as a physical therapist to these sessions.  As a skater she understands the injuries commonly associated with the competitive skater. If you find injuries keeping you on the sideline or want learn skills to keep yourself injury-free, you cannot afford to miss this!

The six sessions will be:

June 7, 2014
Session 1: The Well Balanced Core
After taking this class, you'll:
1. Know what soft tissues that primarily constitute the lumbopelvic core
2. Demonstrate correct recruitment of the core muscles based on task demands
3. Perform at least one corrective exercise for the inner and outer core while monitoring your own mechanics.

June 14, 2014
Session 2: The well-balanced hip and pelvis
After taking this class, you'll be able to:
1. See why or how knee pain is driven from the hip
2. Name the basic muscle groups involved in hip (and knee) control
3. Differentiate between a "tight" and a "short" muscle, thereby better guiding a stretching routine as well as prevent hip syndromes
4. Tape the knee and thigh to help reduce hip pain

June 21, 2014
Session 3: The well-balanced knee
After taking this class, you'll be able to:
1. Name specific knee structures that are often injured as a result of poor skating mechanics
2. Appropriately assess knee alignment as part of posture or movement, and identify key impairments that may contribute to pain/dysfunction/injury
3. Demonstrate correct self-assessment of double and single limb squat mechanics as a method to decrease risk of non-contact skating injuries
4. Tape the kneecap or thigh to reduce patellar pain

June 28, 2014
Session 4: The well-balanced foot and ankle
After taking this class, you'll be able to:
1. Identify key regions of the foot and ankle to enable good stability and function while skating
2. Articulate how the foot and ankle can contribute to knee/hip pain and dysfunction
3. Demonstrate corrective exercises to strengthen the foot and prevent toe deformity
4. Assess over the counter inserts to best suit your foot type
5. Demonstrate proficiency in taping the first toe to reduce the incidence and pain of a "bunion."

July 12, 2014
Session 5: The Well Balanced Shoulder (new class!!)
After taking this class, you'll be able to:
1. Name specific movements or body regions that can contribute to shoulder pain
2. Identify specific muscles that promote shoulder and upper back control, to better improve your derby stance
3. Perform specific exercise progressions to strengthen the control and stability of the shoulder

Session 6: The Well Balanced Skater: hydration, nutrition, and cross training concepts
After taking this class, you'll be able to:
1. Discuss how the timing and content of food can affect athletic performance
2. Accurately plan food and water intake to maximize performance and recovery
3. Critically analyze and modify offskates training programs to improve muscle balance and skating performance.


Each session with consist of lecture, interactive labs, practical taping instruction, and open discussions.

30 max attendees will be allowed per session.

Ticket pricing:
Full Program (All 6 session): $150
Partial Program (Purchase 3 sessions @ $30/session): $90
Single Session (Purchase ala carte): $35/session
Team 1 (All 6 sessions for team of 5 skaters @ $140/skater): $700/ team
Team 2 (1 session for team of 5 skaters @ $30/skater): $150/ team
