Melida Rodas, the 20252026 Poet Laureate of Jersey City, is an interdisciplinary curator, artist, educator, and community advocate whose work spans poetry, cultural programming, and social justice. With over twenty years of experience in education and a history of leadership in major poetry and arts festivals, her writing and advocacy have earned her numerous awards, accolades and publications alongside celebrated authors and historical figures. As the founder of The Jersey City Poetry Festival (.org) and a champion for youth arts education, she is committed to fostering creative, connected, and equitable communities.
Susan Murphy, is a Jersey City born and bred performer and writer who has worked on
the stage and in music since the age of 10. A graduate of NYUs Tisch School of the Arts,
her work is seen often at numerous venues in New York. As a writer and producer of her own work, Murphy has sought to blur the boundaries of music and theatre to create performance memoir. Her most expansive piece, Girl/Group, premiered at the world renowned La MaMa. Above all else, Murphy considers herself an actor of musical material, and she pulls from the many genres, styles, and periods of American popular music to create a heightened experience of storytelling for herself and her audience alike.
Gianna Valdez graduated from NJCU in 2025 with a B.A. in English. She is a two-time recipient of the Walter Glospie Academy of American Poets prize. Her prose poetry and creative nonfiction explore experiences and complexities of the body. Her fragmentary "Spilled Ink and Other Surrenders" dissects facets of identity, language, the body.
