Retrofitting Bend for a Resilient Future
Oregon residents will be increasingly threatened by wildfires, heat, drought, and other natural disasters. The recent LA fires, flash floods in Texas, along with the heatwave that the Pacific Northwest experienced in 2021, are recent reminders of the strain which these increasingly dangerous and frequent weather patterns can place on communities. The ongoing cuts to FEMA will also reduce the ability of federal agencies to assist communities in these times of crisis, making it all the more important for communities to take the initiative to make preparations and strategic investments.
In the face of these increasing risks, cities and community organizations around the country are increasingly deploying resilience hubs as a means to help safeguard community members in times of emergency.
Steve Abbott, a principal at RMI (formerly Rocky Mountain Institute) will speak to his teams insights from working with dozens of groups across the country to establish local resilience hub programs.
The presentation will cover: key elements of a resilience hub; important technical and financial considerations for system design; models for deploying hubs at various scales; and case studies from successful efforts. Steve will also speak to ways communities can leverage nature-based solutions to mitigate extreme heat and manage water issues during storms.
