Choro Das 3 is a Brazilian trio which was formed in 2003. Since then, the 3 sisters from the interior state of Sao Paulo, who have chosen to play instrumental music, have been recognized professionally at a level they never imagined. In spite of their young age, sisters Corina, Lia and Elisa have amassed an amazing number of major performances. In 2002 they played for a public of more than one million people during their performance at Reveillon at Paulista Avenue, a public New Year's Eve Party, in Sao Paulo.

The Brazillionaires are 3 musicians hailing from Portland, OR with a shared desire to push their abilities through the exciting and challenging choro music of Brazil. The music is a dynamic blend of Afro-Brazilian syncopation, jazz harmony and elements of Classical European melody and composition. The trio throws in a pinch of samba and American old time grooves for good measure. The result is dynamic, romantic and danceable.

Zak Borden (Mandolin, Percussion) has been performing, recording, touring and teaching in the U.S. and abroad for 15 years. He studied samba as an underfrad with Geoff Johns and his background spans many styles of acoustic music including bluegrass, Irish and string jazz. He has been on recording sessions alongside leading purveyors of acoustic music including Tim O'Brien, Casey Neill, Willy Mason, Darol Anger, Danny Barnes, Buell Neidlinger and many more.

Peter Fung (Guitar, percussion) has been happily obsessed with choro and samba for the last two decades. He has been a performing member of the Manhattan School of Samba (NYC), the Lions of Batucada (Portland, OR), and Samba do Coracao (SF BAY Area). Peter has studied music in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Salvador, Brazil. His teachers include Arnaldinho do Cavaco and Jorge Alabe. Peter is founder of Portland's Roda de Choro, and annual Dia do Choro celebration. He is also co-founder of the area's samba-pagode gathering.

Simon Lucas (Pandeiro, percussion) has been playing and studying drums since the age of 9 and holds a BA of percussion performance from Humboldt State University.  Simon has studied rhythms and percussion instruments used in African, Brazilian, Afro Cuban, and Caribbean music with world renowned teachers: Dr. Eugene Novotney, CK Ladzekpo, Macio Peter, Michael Spiro, Mark Lamson, Ray Holman, Brian Rice, Andy Narell, and Lansana Kouyate. Simon is also a founding member of West African drum troupe Dun Dun Fare (CA), and Brazilian Samba bateria Bloco Firmez.

"Borden is one heckuva mandolin player"
-The Willamette Week  Portland's Newsweekly

Hot choro music. Mighty fine mandolin tone."
-Jazz Mando

"The Brazillionaires hold the joy and rhythm of Brazilian choro mixed with a sparkling feel of American swing, resulting in a fresh and delightful experience." -Dudu Maia, master Brazilian mandolinist

Rio Con Brio captivates audiences around the country with their intimate performance of the beautiful and esoteric Brazilian repertoire known as choro, the early 20th Century street music of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Influenced by equal parts Afro-Brazilian rhythms and the contemporary cafe music of Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, choro is both exotic and familiar, evoking in turn the carnival of Rio and the cafes of Paris.

Guitarist Mike Burdette and mandolinist Tim Connell exhibit finesse and passion in their playing, while displaying a sincere love of the choro repertoire and connection to their audience. An evening with Rio Con Brio is a delightful tour of European and New World music as experienced by the mandolin and guitar and as told by two soulful, intelligent, modern musicians  a beautiful intersection of Brazilian rhythm, classical technique and jazz improvisation.
