Anna Tivel's new album, Before Machines, is a raw, mostly live recording of a year's worth of songwriting. Anna joined forces with some incredible Portland musicians, (Sam Howard, Taylor Kingman, David Strackany, Mike Monko, and Jeffrey Martin) and holed up at Fluff and Gravy Studio for a few days of basement recording-to-tape magic. "It's an intimate, stark representation of these songs that I'm very excited to share," says Anna. "Everyone listened so hard to each other, even in the silences, and played with so much heart.
Anna Tivel's wide-eyed celestial folk songs belong in a similar ballpark with Anais Mitchell, Gregory Alan Isakov and Laura Veirs, where gentle picking plucks among occasionally unconventional sounds and a gorgeous voice tells stories of life in a world of natural wonders. The resulting music is incredibly honest, lyric-driven, and deeply affecting.

A mainstay of the Portland music scene over the past several years Mike Coykendall is nothing if not in demand. The veteran Portland producer and musician has been amazingly prolific over the past two decades or so roughly half that time spent in the Rose City after relocating from San Francisco. He's released a handful of records under his own name this year's Chasing Away the Dots is his fifth as well as a part of bands like Klyde Konnor and The Old Joe Clarks. He's also been a mainstay in M. Ward's band, and has produced and/or engineered numerous others at his Blue Rooms Studio. It's been on that production and engineering end that Coykendall has made a name for himself as of late, working with names like Ward, Blitzen Trapper, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside and Jolie Holland, to name a few.
Vacilando is a vehicle for the solo work of John Shepski, fined-tuned by the deft hands/ears of Juniana and Chad Lanning, and prettied up from time to time by Jason Montgomery. Vacilando is slow and atmospheric; It breaths deeply with vast empty spaces and soundscapes over heart-in-hand lyrics and a humble delivery. But, what is most 'strange' about Vacilando is that there is no interactaction with the audience. John and Chad do not give a 'thank you' after a song and not even Juni will give eye contact as she sits behind her percussion and electronic wall. The audience doesn't exist for all intents and purposes. They describe themselves as "Bleak Midwestern Soundscapes via the Pacific Northwest."
