Sips & Sounds: Coffee House Music MeetUp
The Department of Cultural Affairs' Performing Arts Division is excited to present the first Sips & Sounds: Coffee House Music MeetUp program as part of the EMPOWERMENT: Edith + Etta six-day event. Teens, ages 13 to 19 years old, are invited to perform their original music in a casual coffee house environment. Teen musicians are commissioned to create original music inspired or influenced by Etta James. This is the perfect event for teens and their friends and family to hang out and share music together. All are welcome...performers, listeners, and music lovers.
You may be wondering why a PopUp Music Coffeehouse? This type of space feels less intimidating and more personal, which is the perfect environment for showcasing original music and connecting with others. This laid-back space allows individuals to express their creativity and share their unique sounds and lyrics in a setting that encourages individuality and personal artistry. A coffee house has a cozy, relaxed vibe, allowing artists to connect more directly with their audience. A venue space like this low-pressure and builds experience in front of an audience, especially important for young musicians looking to improve their stage presence and performance skills.
Here at Sips & Sounds we foster a sense of community, and encourage musicians to engage with their friends, family, and local fans, not to mention connections with other musicians and creatives in their area. Most importantly Coffee houses are generally more receptive to original, indie music than larger venues, where cover bands or more mainstream acts are the norm. Teens may feel that their music is appreciated in this kind of environment where authenticity and uniqueness are celebrated.

Performance times are between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Lankershim Arts Center in the NoHo Arts District: 5108 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, CA 91601. All chosen musicians will be paid $100 for the gig. There are only eight spots available for this date and teens applying should be intermediate to advanced musicians that create instrumental or singer songwriter music appropriate for all ages to enjoy in a coffee house setting.
