MARC RIBOT LIVE SCORE TO CHAPLIN'S 'THE KID'!
Anthology is beyond ecstatic to welcome guitarist extraordinaire Marc Ribot for a revival of one of his most marvelous and requested film score projects. Whether as a sideman with the likes of John Zorn and Tom Waits, as leader of the bands Ceramic Dog and Los Cubanos Postizos, or as a solo artist, Ribot's distinctive tone is instantly recognizable and immediately captivating. His eclectic range of influences and absolutely awesome technical ability never fail to surprise, and believe us, he has soul. Ribot's music for THE KID strays from Chaplin's score, yet it is as earnest and empathetic as Charlie's own lush composition. Premiered at Merkin Hall as part of the 2010 New York Guitar Festival, it is high time that this project returns to our fair city and graces our large Courthouse Theater screen.

"I did not use Charlie Chaplin's score as a reference. I admire his score greatly, and his writing greatly, but I did not want to use that as a reference because my interest in this, as with everything else, comes from doing a particular reading. And my particular reading of this film is as a contemporary film. This is kind of striking to me. When I first saw the film as a kid  like 45 years ago  it seemed really old. It seemed ancient. It was kind of walled off in this ghetto of the past. So much so that the content of the film seemed funny even when the characters weren't being intentionally funny. It seemed inherently funny for something to be that old. Whereas, when I watch it now, I don't see old. I see a contemporary story about a single father in economically really hard conditions." Marc Ribot

Charlie Chaplin
THE KID
1921, 68 min, 35mm-to-digital
"6 reels of joy" proclaimed the poster for Chaplin's first feature film, a major conceptual and comedic leap from the shorts he had begun making in 1914. The story is as sweet and at times tear-jerking as it is simple and hysterical. Chaplin's classic character The Little Tramp adopts an abandoned boy played by Jackie Coogan (who later portrayed Uncle Fester on the TV show THE ADDAMS FAMILY) and, naturally, a series of sensational hijinks ensue. Chaplin arguably never had a better sidekick than Coogan, and this might very well be his most heartbreaking film. A pure delight from start to finish and proof positive that Chaplin was one of the greatest gifts to the silver screen of any era.
