MADS TOLLING & JOHN R. BURR, FEATURING KENNY WASHINGTON
JAZZ VIOLIN, JAZZ & BLUES PIANO, AND INTENSE, SOULFUL VOCALS !!

Mads Tolling is a two-time Grammy Award-winning violinist. Born and raised in Denmark, Mads began playing the violin at the age of six, busking in the streets of Copenhagen with his sister. He later moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music, where he was discovered by legendary jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. This opportunity took him further west to join bassist Stanley Clarkes band and the Turtle Island Quartet. Today, Mads leads his own groups and is also a member of Bob Weir & Wolf Bros.

Mads has graced renowned stages such as Radio City Music Hall, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and the Hollywood Bowl. His recordings have been featured on NPRs Morning Edition and in The Washington Post. Additionally, Mads has twice been commissioned to compose and perform violin concertos, including one for the late maestro Michael Morgan and the Oakland Symphony.

This afternoon, Mads returns to Piedmont Center for the Arts with a stellar lineup, including prolific jazz pianist John R. Burr and Grammy-nominated vocalist Kenny Washington. Although all three are celebrated names in the Bay Area, this marks their first time performing together.

Mads and John will feature music from their 2023 album, Ramblin, which includes songs ranging from Toto and The Beatles to John McLaughlin and Chick Corea, along with a few original compositions. Kenny Washington, one of the worlds premier jazz vocalists and a frequent performer at Wynton Marsalis Jazz at Lincoln Center, will join them. Jazz writer Andrew Gilbert has dubbed Kenny The Superman of the Bay Area Jazz Scene. Together, the three will perform American Songbook tunes by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and George Gershwin.
