Speaker: Bill Laprade, LEG Talk Title: The Many Strata of Bill Laprade's Career
Bill Laprade Biography: Bill grew up in central Massachusetts among metamorphic rocks and glacial deposits. He graduated from Clark University in Worcester in 1967 with a degree in geography. At the height of the Vietnam War, Bill was drafted soon after graduation and spent the next four years in the U.S. Army. After attending Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, he went to jump school and the Special Forces Officers Course at Fort Bragg. He spent the next two years with the U.S. Army Special Forces, rising to the rank of captain before separating from the service in 1971. Bill started a masters program in geography shortly thereafter at Arizona State University, graduating with an M.A. in 1973. While there, he concentrated on geomorphology and glacial/Quaternary geology, which was to prove valuable throughout his life. In September 1973, he started at Shannon & Wilson in Seattle as a technician doing both laboratory and field work. In 1981 while still at S&W, after a year of additional studies, Bill completed course work for a B.S. in geological sciences from the University of Washington. He has worked on a wide variety of engineering geology projects over his 50 years in the business to include field explorations, field reconnaissance, soil sample interpretation, laboratory and field testing, subsurface stratigraphy, expert witness services, borrow and quarry rock evaluation, and landslide characterization and remediation. Bill also served two terms on the Washington State Geologist Licensing Board, and served on the boards of the local AEG and the Northwest Geological Society. Bill has worked in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Alaska, Boston, Peru, and Taiwan.
Abstract: Bill has worked closely with geotechnical engineers throughout his career to provide accurate factual information and insightful subsurface interpretation to allow engineers to make good design solutions. His early work as a lab and field technician combined with his geologic background, and particularly glacial geology acumen, gave him a keen understanding of soil and rock properties. In this presentation, he will present 21 projects in which he participated with others for successful completion. They range from Taiwan to Boston and from Peru to the Point Barrow, although the bulk of his work has been in western Washington.
